Warthog Hardcover – May 9, 2017 by Birdie Black (Author), Rosalind Beardshaw (Illustrator) (#IBRChildrensBooks)

Published by Nosy Crow, 2016.

From the die-cut cover to the lift-the-flaps inside the book, Warthog has been lovingly and thoughtfully produced. It’s a brilliantly interactive book that’s really attractive to young readers. It encourages them to explore and get involved in the story even if they can’t yet read it themselves.

Warthog is a counting book (numbers one to ten). It’s written in rhyme and has a lovely bouncy read-aloud rhythm. Young Warthog goes a-wandering one day and, as he marvels at the animals and plants around him, he unintentionally strays too far from home. He loses track of time and soon it’s very late. He then finds himself in a spot of bother when he follows some large paw prints into a cave…

The book has been beautifully illustrated by Rosalind Beardshaw. She has used her trademark patchwork/collage style (which I love) to add colour and details to the plants. The young warthog is so animated and full of expression that he really comes to life on the page.

The end papers are great too. At the front of the book, we are introduced to the animals that Warthog will meet on his adventure. At the back of the book, there’s a pictorial summary of the things we’ve been counting. This is a particularly handy prompt when helping your child to re-tell the story.

This book is a super collaboration between author and illustrator and one which we enjoyed very much.

Suitable from birth (although very young children will need supervision because of the flaps).
